Assistant Principal

Mrs. Jessica Moore has the pleasure of being the assistant principal at Hawthorne Middle School.  She attended the University of California, Riverside where she received her B.A. in American history and a Multiple Subjects teaching credential with a CLAD emphasis.  She also holds an M.A. in Educational Administration from California State University, Dominguez Hills.  Mrs. Moore began her career in education as a 6th grade teacher for three years in the Inland Empire.  After relocating to the South Bay in 2002, Mrs. Moore continued her teaching career in the Hawthorne School District as a 5th grade teacher at Eucalyptus Elementary School.  In addition, Mrs. Moore has served the district as a literacy coach for six years at Eucalyptus and Kornblum Schools and as an assistant principal for several years.  Her family is truly her “heart”, and she thoroughly enjoys being married to her husband and being the mother of two boys.  Mrs. Moore is also a huge tennis fan, and she enjoys cooking, traveling, and reading about familiar and unfamiliar topics.  She is indeed excited to be a part of the Hawk Family!

Mr. Ken Takata is the proud first Dean of Students at Hawthorne Middle School.  He is a home-grown product of the Hawthorne School District, having attended Ramona School and Hawthorne Middle School (formerly Hawthorne Intermediate). He has over 25 years of experience in the district, having taught various grade levels.  He was the district’s first National Board Certified Teacher.  He holds a B.A. in Liberal Studies from Cal State Northridge, in addition to an M.A. in education from Pepperdine and an M.A. in administration from Cal State Long Beach.


In his position as Dean of Students, Mr. Takata enjoys working with students, parents, and the community to ensure academic success and a safe school environment.


Mr. Takata has been married for 15 years and has two sons.  He enjoys traveling, sports, reading, and being a Boy Scout leader.



Counselor  Ms. Janna Iamaleava has been in the Hawthorne School District since 1997.  She began her career as a classroom teacher at Zela Davis Elementary.  After 7 years in the classroom, she became a Special Projects teacher at Washington for 2 years.  She has been a middle school counselor for the last 11 years with 7 of them at Prairie Vista MS and the last 4 years here at HMS.  She earned her B.A. in Psychology from Cal State Long Beach in 1996, her M.A. in Education in 2000, as well as an M.S. Counseling in 2007.  She enjoys reading, fitness, shopping and spending time with her family
Ms. Demetra Bouras
Special Projects

Ms. Valdiviezo earned a B.A. in Liberal Studies from the California State University of Long Beach, a Teaching Credential through Cal State University, Long Beach, and an M.A. in Child and Adolescent Literacy and Reading Certificate from Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles. Ms. Valdiviezo currently teaches Language Arts and Social Studies to seventh graders. She also teaches Introductory Spanish to seventh and eighth graders. Alongside teaching, Ms. Valdiviezo enjoys traveling to new parts of the world but cannot see herself leave the South bay beach area for too long; she has also found she developed a new hobby for cooking!


Mrs. Tania Amezcua was born and raised in Torrance and graduated from Cal State Dominguez Hills.  She has worked in education for almost 20 years, as an instructional aide and teacher.  As a new acquisition to our Hawk family, she supports our English Learners and our ELAC committee.  Before coming to Hawthorne she worked at a local high school where she taught Language Arts and Intervention classes.  In her spare time, she enjoys watching sporting events and spending time with her husband, family, and friends. 

Math & Language Arts Coaches
Ms. A. Coulson began her teaching career in the Hawthorne School District. Since that time she has taught middle school mathematics in northern California, and most recently in Naperville, Illinois. She earned her B.S. in Education from the University of Idaho, a supplemental math credential from California State University Dominiguez Hills, and a Masters in Curriculum and Instruction from North Central College in Naperville, Illinois. As a past California mentor teacher, she has taught middle school mathematics and pre-algebra, and trained teachers in middle school mathematics instruction.
Mrs. Cardenas earned her BA in Liberal Studies with a concentration in Chicano Studies, along with a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential from Loyola Marymount University. She has been with the district for the past ten years and is G.A.T.E. certified. She began as a 4th grade teacher at Jefferson Elementary for two years, then a 5th-grade teacher at Ramona Elementary and has since been teaching 6th/ 7th grade at HMS. This is her first year as Literacy Coach. In her spare time she enjoys spending time with her husband Eric, their toddler Olivia and 2 dogs; Buche and Bosco
