Assistant Principal

Ms. Akila Jones earned a B.S. in Social Work from San Diego State University (SDSU). She furthered her educational journey by earning her Teaching credential, Masters in Education and Administrative Credential all from California State University (CSU), Dominguez Hills. Before earning her teaching credential, Ms. Jones spent several years as a Social Worker in San Diego. Ms. Jones has taught for 11 years in the Hawthorne School District ranging in grades from first through eighth. She has earned both Rookie of the Year (2001) and Teacher of the Year (2010). She is currently teaching sixth and seventh-grade Language Arts intervention classes here at HMS as well as fulfilling her duties as a Special Projects teacher. She enjoys reading, traveling and collecting frog knick-knacks.

Dean of Students

Mr. Ken Takata is the proud first Dean of Students at Hawthorne Middle School.  He is a home-grown product of the Hawthorne School District, having attended Ramona School and Hawthorne Middle School (formerly Hawthorne Intermediate). 
He is in his 24th year in the district, having taught 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, and 6th grades.  He was the district’s first National Board Certified Teacher, and was re-certified in November.  He holds a B.A. in Liberal Studies from Cal State Northridge, in addition to an M.A. in education from Pepperdine and an M.A. in administration from Cal State Long Beach.


In his new position as Dean of Students, Mr. Takata is working with students, parents, and the community to ensure academic success and a safe school environment.


Mr. Takata has been married for 12 years and has two sons.  He enjoys traveling, sports, reading, and being involved with his son’s cub scouting.

Special Projects

Ms. Valdiviezo earned a B.A. in Liberal Studies from the California State University of Long Beach, a Teaching Credential through Cal State University, Long Beach, and an M.A. in Child and Adolescent Literacy and Reading Certificate from Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles. Ms. Valdiviezo currently teaches Language Arts and Social Studies to seventh graders. She also teaches Introductory Spanish to seventh and eighth graders. Alongside teaching, Ms. Valdiviezo enjoys traveling to new parts of the world but cannot see herself leave the South bay beach area for too long; she has also found she developed a new hobby for cooking!


Ms. Tania Amezcua

1Q04284.jpg Ms. A. Coulson began her teaching career in the Hawthorne School District. Since that time she has taught middle school mathematics in northern California, and most recently in Naperville, Illinois. She earned her B.S. in Education from the University of Idaho, a supplemental math credential from California State University Dominiguez Hills, and a Masters in Curriculum and Instruction from North Central College in Naperville, Illinois. As a past California mentor teacher, she has taught middle school mathematics and pre-algebra, and trained teachers in middle school mathematics instruction.
