Trimester 2 - SLAM Showcase

Our music enrichment program here at HMS is called SLAM! Last Thursday was their showcase performance. Our students have learned so much and did an amazing job! They are pictured with their UCLA music volunteers. Additional picture of Daniel Garcia, Sally the base cello, and Scott Johnson (who manages the UCLA volunteers and students), serenaded the office with an impromptu rendition of Michael Jackson's, I Want You Back.  Daniel's singing warmed our hearts and lifted our day.

HMS S.T.A.R.S. - A Day in Court

With the support of Centinela Youth Services, Hawthorne Middle School students attended the 2017 Peer Mediation Invitational at the Western Justice Center in Pasadena on March 14.  Hawthorne Middle School students worked with professional mediation coaches, high school improvisation actors and other elementary and middle school students.  One of the highlights was meeting “Judge Judy” Chirlin and Judge Dorothy Nelson and be able to sit in Judge Nelson’s courtroom.

At the invitational, students strengthened their peer mediation skills.  Additionally, they received feedback and encouragement from peers and coaches, and were recognized with certificates for their positive contributions to their campuses.  Hawthorne Middle School S.T.A.R.S. (STudents Able to Resolve Situations) Peer Mediation meets twice per week to learn problem-solving skills and perform real peer mediations.  If you are interested in becoming a peer mediator at Hawthorne Middle School, please contact Principal Rudy Salas or Dean Ken Takata at (310) 676-0167.
